My Diaper Bag Essentials

Being a new mom can be overwhelming so I creating this list of essentials I posted on my Passy Clips Instagram account and thought I would share on my personal blog for anybody interested...

I try to keep things as simple as possible when I'm on the go. Aside from the obvious diapers and baby wipes, here's a list of some items I can't leave home without when I want to pack light, now that the little one is in his young toddler phase:

1. Sonia Carryall by Nena & Co: I love using a smaller diaper bag like this that doesn't weigh me down. In my opinion, their hand loomed quality is the best on the market. I'm also a huge fan of the women behind this brand and all the good they do for their employees in Guatemala.

2. Fox Wooden Teether by Bohem: A perfect compliment to your Passy Clips for the teething toddler. Now available in our etsy shop.

3. Leather Braided Pacifier Clip by Passy Clips: I love this gender neutral and fun color. Available in our shop. Color: Ocean.

4. All Natural Pacifier by Natursutten: my favorite eco friendly pacifier to pair with our clips. Now available in our shop.

5. Mineral Based Sunscreen by Babyganics: this travel stick is perfect on-the-go and safe for your little one's skin.

6. Baby Healing Ointment by Aquaphor: living in a desert climate I need something that really works for those random dry patches around my baby's nose and cheeks.

7. Bottle by Como Tomo: this was my go to bottle in between breast feedings.

8. Organic Baby Food Pouches by Gerber: it's always good to have food on hand. Plus, I love the healthy food combinations they offer.

9. Stuffed Elephant Pacifier by Wubba Nub: I use these at night so I'm not searching for my baby's pacifier in the dark. He cuddles with it as he falls asleep and feels for it on his own when he needs it.

10. iPhone/Wallet Case by Madewell: I love how simple this is and allows me to keep 3 cards with my phone at all times. On sale, too!

11. Bridgitte Audacious Lipstick by Nars: my favorite neutral, but fun color right now.

12. Voluminous Waterproof Mascara in Black by L'oreal: I've been using this mascara since 7th grade, over 20 years!! No matter how many others I try, nothing beats it, or the price.

13. Tinted Moisturizer by Nars: it goes on smooth and moisturizing. I've tried a lot and this one's my favorite.

What's inside yours? Did I miss anything?

Acid Reflux: The Best Advice I Ever Got

Fitz was a pretty good baby until, night after night, he would cry after I fed him. After almost 2 weeks of him screaming, him constantly spitting up and interrupted sleep for the both of us, I went to visit a friend in the hospital after she had recently had a baby. There happened to be a NICU nurse in her room that overheard me talking about the issues Fitz was having. She gave me a few pieces of advice that completely changed my life...

• Feed your baby on their right sideWhen they lay on their right side the food naturally flows into their belly and is more likely to stay down. When they are on their left side it naturally comes back up. It sounded like hocus pocus and I was skeptical, but I figured it didn't hurt to try. You guys... It was a miracle! Why had I never heard this before?! It's like this secret that every mom should know. (For breastfeeding moms: While nursing on your left side hold your baby normal - across your body with their head slightly elevated. When feeding them on your right side use the football hold, also with their head slightly elevated. This technique reduced my baby's symptoms by AT LEAST 90% and he was a much happier baby.)

Squeeze out your milk firstThis is if you're nursing. They won't swallow as much air if you help to get the milk to flow.

Always swaddleBe sure to pull extra tight along their tummy and chest area.

Elevate their headYou can put a pillow under their mattress so they are sleeping on a slant.

As a new mom I'm no expert, but, because this advice was so valuable to me I try to share it with as many people as possible. It seems like whenever I pass it on to another mom dealing with the same issues, they come back and tell me how much of a difference it has made, especially feeding them on their right side. To me, it's the greatest trick out there and I can't believe the nurses don't tell you about it immediately after having a baby. That advice was as good as gold in my eyes. I hope this helps you, too!

Side note: Fitz turns one in 3 days and I have been so bad about documenting the best, most rewarding year of my life. I'm determined to play catch up on this thing. There is so much I need to document for my memory and my little family's sake.

My Little Valentine

Lezlie hosted the cutest little love fest for the mamas and their little ones. Fitz has never been around so many kids and toys in his life. When I came home I was like, poor guy... back to your tupperware drawer, wooden spoons and tennis balls. If there is a ball around, he'll find it. That's his thing these days and one of his first words. Here's some pics of the party...

I think I know what I'll get him for his bday in a month:

DIY Finger Puppet Valentines

Fitz was invited to the cutest Valentine's Day party today. I hadn't even thought of bringing a valentine until the last minute. When I saw my finger puppets laying around I thought of a really quick and easy valentine to make and figured I would share if there are any other last minute friends out there.

Downloadable Template (when you print change to margins: none)
Ikea Animal Finger Puppets ($4.99 for 10)
Xacto Knife

All you have to do is print out the template, cut each valentine out, cut along the gray lines with an Xacto knife and slide on a puppet. Took me 10 minutes, tops.

On another note, I haven't blogged for a year and I can't tell you how good it feels to be working on fun, personal projects for a change. Apparently having a baby takes up a lot of time ;) Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

Happy Birthday, Kirk

This past November my older brother, Kirk, passed away in a surfing accident in Hawaii. Today would be his 33rd birthday. My sister's sweet friends put this slideshow together for us to play at his memorial service and I treasure having these photos along with the memories and emotions they bring. It makes my heart hurt and heal all at once. The music is a few of Kirk's favorite songs.

Three months later and it's still difficult to put my thoughts and feelings into words. I tried and typed them in this post, but it just didn't express how I really feel about everything so I erased it all. Maybe someday I'll try again.

I love you, Kirk and I miss you terribly. I'll be celebrating you today.

Baby Adams 1 // 33 Weeks

For Christmas our only presents to each other were cross country skis so we could go whenever we want without the headache of rentals and returns. It's the perfect winter exercise while I'm pregnant as I can go my own pace, breathe the mountain air outside and get some cardio in while enjoying the nature around me. The further along I get the harder it is to maneuver but the awkwardness is what makes it fun anyway. It makes me feel like a kid again, learning to ski for the first time since there aren't any edges along the sides. Makes for a few good laughs, too.

By the way, what the heck is a durian fruit? And who really cares what size produce the baby is? I don't want to compare him to food anymore...

Baby Adams 1 // 32 Weeks

The seam of the attached liner in this dress had to be cut open on the sides in order for it to fit over my bump. I'm getting crafty over here...

Baby Adams 1 // 31 Weeks

I'm going to have to start getting creative with these poses. It started getting awkward about 15 weeks ago. Here's another one that practically looks like all the others, but with a bigger bump... and arms... and bootie. Aw man. I was convinced that only your belly grew until my boobs became monsters and now the rest of my body keeps getting bigger. Oh, the price we pay for these little punks hitching a free ride.

...I kid
...Sort of.

Baby Adams 1 // 30 Weeks

Ever since we got back to Utah the weather has been horribly freezing, the main reason I hadn't taken any belly shots for 5 weeks. Being bundled up twenty-four seven seemed like a much better idea. I finally got one at the 30 week mark when we went up to Midway to check out the ice castles. They were prettier than I had expected, making a nice backdrop for my baby bump.

Adams Baby 1 // 25 Weeks

My sister took this photo of me at Alligators on the north shore of Hawaii, the same place Kirk had passed away. It was special to be there with my family and feel like he was with us, too.

Adams Baby 1 // 24 Weeks

It's not everyday you get to see the Taj Mahal face to face. I had imagined having those romantic and ethereal feelings when I saw her for the first time. This day, however, was nothing like I expected it to be. Instead, there was an emotional cloud following me around as I walked from site to site. I truly hate this photo, I hate that I am forcing a smile and I hate that I was so far from my home and my family.  This day of feeling helpless in a city surrounded by busy noise and strangers is something I will never forget. This was the day Kirk had passed away and it gives me the chills when I think about being there all over again.

Adams Baby 1 // 23 Weeks

It's been a while since I updated my blog. I guess I'm just not ready to put in to words my India trip and everything that came with it and then after. For now I'll just post a few belly shots to catch up with this little baby timeline that is going by faster than I can imagine. This was taken at Amber Fort in Jaipur India.

Adams Baby 1 // 22 Weeks

If you can't tell, I'm trying to be more consistent about taking pregnancy pictures to document my growing body and all the other changes that come with having our first baby. This here is at 22 weeks on our porch in all its fall glory...

In other news, I've been busy getting ready for a big trip to India that I'm half excited about and half nervous for. Traveling without Larry while being pregnant makes me feel more vulnerable but I'll be staying with friends and I know I will be in good hands. If you have any recommendations of things to see or do I would love to hear them. As of now, I'm off to the airport for 24 hours of air travel! Can you tell I'm freaking out a little?!... because I totally am.

Adams Baby 1 // 21 Weeks

Now that my baby belly is more prominent I'm having more fun showing it off. The first trimester I looked pudgy and didn't feel too good. Then the second trimester kicks in and I start looking like the real deal. Honestly, to me, my mid section has never been more beautiful, all tight and round with a little guy squirming inside. Well, minus my monster bosoms right now. Those, I could definitely live without...

Adams Baby 1 // 18 Weeks

Every year Kassey and I go to Sundance for lunch to celebrate our birthdays together and it's always such a beautiful time with the fall coming alive. This year we were a week late making my baby bump at the 18 weeks mark. Kassey is pregnant too and only 3 weeks behind me with probably her last child while I'm on my first (wah-wah). It's fun having a friend to go through the changes with. I'm hoping she's having a boy so our little guys can be best buds whether they like it or not ;)

Adams Baby 1 // 17 Weeks

Over my birthday weekend we stayed in Midway and enjoyed the mellow lifestyle and changing colors of the leaves. It was nice to get away and have some quiet time in the country. The weather was perfectly crisp and as we were admiring the landscape on our Sunday drive we decided to take some pregnancy pics at the Tate Barn. We found out that we are having a boy so now this little "it" can finally be a "he" and we can start scheming up names for this little guy. It feels real and we are so excited!

3 Years (and some photos)

I'm not one to get too sappy, brag publicly about my "most amazing husband" or list the positive attributes of my marriage. Don't get me wrong, it's great if you prefer to show your admiration that way. Perhaps words of affirmation is your love language. It's just one of those things that I like to keep private and close, if ya know what I mean. But I've always believed Heavenly Father had someone special in mind for me, as I know He does for all of us. I just never imagined that person could be this good...

Happy 3 years, my Larry. Thank you for being the friend I needed and for the butterflies/baby kicks in my tummy that seem to keep coming out of nowhere. I love you always and even more with each new chapter of our lives.

On another note, as I mentioned before, my sister has been building her wedding and lifestyle photography portfolio and asked to take some photos of us when she was visiting back in June (I know... it's taken me a while to get these posted). It has been fun watching her business grow and be a part of it if even in a small way. I can't tell you how often we drive in the foothills near our house to run some of the energy out of Filly and Sedona (they have a lot!) and I feel really lucky to have a portion of our life documented in this way. Pay no mind to the goofy ones... they just make me smile. She made the experience so comfortable and easy and of course I highly recommend her. So if you are looking for a photographer in the San Diego area you should check out her website and give her a call. She's the sweetest little thing and really affordable. Christmas card photos coming up? Do it :)

Lake Powell

We met my family in Lake Powell back in August for a quick weekend trip. It's becoming tricky to get together these days, now that we are becoming more and more spread out with my dad in Hawaii, Merrily in California and us in Utah. We missed having Kirk who is still out in Hawaii and Matt, serving a mission in New York. I was 10 weeks pregnant so it was a totally different experience from any other time in Powell. No cliff jumping, no wakeboarding (well, maybe just a little) and only the mellowest of tube rides behind the boat. All adventure went out the window but it was still fun relaxing in the water and enjoying each other's company when I wasn't napping the days away. And seeing Jillian and Manny braver than the last time we were there got me really excited for our own little water baby someday. That time is getting closer as I watch my belly grow. Is this really happening?? (eeeek!)
